Default KJ, 2.8l diesel, CRD, replace engine rear main seal

After putting up with a small constant drip from the engine for some time it is now time to fix the problem. Has anyone had to either have the job done, or done the job themselves. Does the engine have to come out or can the gearbox just be removed. Any suggestions for mechanic in Perth if a major job.

I've not done it myself, but would imagine it would be a transmission removed to access the rear seal.

I have done the RMS on a XJ diesel & in the process of taking a CRD out of a KJ.
Will be much easier to take gearbox out.
Be prepared that you may end up replacing the clutch while you have it out.
Always use a viton seal. Dont know what size seal you need.
A trolley jack is needed & a couple of long socket extensions for the top bell housing bolts.
A couple of G clamps are useful to help getting the GB back up & forward.
Make sure you have a solid floor to work on & the jeep is up enough to allow easy access under it.

thanks for the info. I have been looking on the net for any you tube videos on the KJ rear main seal without any luck. Plenty on other jeep engines tho. The KJ seal looks like its one piece where other Jeeps seem to have two piece seals.

A couple points:

The CRD rear main can be made to leak simply by over filling the sump - so first thing is to make sure you keep the oil level just below the full mark, and keep it there for a month. The leak may stop. You will have to clean up the area around the rear bell housing joint to see it clearly. Give it some time.
If you do install a new one, don't over fill the sump or you will be right back where you started.
Make sure your PVC valve is not blocked, as high crankcase pressures can force oil past the seal anyway. This includes making sure any Provent or catch can in the plumbing is free breathing.
I bought a new rear main seal probably about seven years ago, when I first noticed a little wicking of oil around the joint. But i have never had to change it, and all I ever did was clean it up and watch the fill level.
Good luck.
And download the Service Manual for the how to on changing the seal.
