I'm assuming is a 4.0 and not a diesel here.
Likely CPS (more likely then distributor issue)
If its never been replaced, it will need to sooner or later. Failing CPS (crankshaft position sensor) gives the exact same symptoms.
Get a quality one.
(And since there are always several possible causes in a car: cam sensor would be another).
But I'd say, get a quality CPS...

Mine didnt throw a code when the CPS went out the same way...backfiring like an oldtimer in a cartoon...but no codes...

You could take fuel pressures, but it must have pretty much completely shat itself to be causing this I'd reckon...
