Looks like you caught it just in time. piston was getting ready to turn sideways & send rod through block. If bore is good, you could probably get away with replacement piston. I would be checking rod for bends though. Set of rings & bearing shells & it should be good for another 300,000 !

Yeah I rocked it back and forth checking for play before pulling the sump and it had an audible noise, moved a good few mm too.

got rear-ended at speed by a P-plater,

XJ is a writeoff, no one got hurt,

I'm pissed though, as I only have third-party Insurance, and my XJ had been having major upgrades
