Do a cylinder leak down test on every cylinder.

See what that shows and go from there.

It's basically the opposite of a compression test. A compression test tells you how much pressure each cylinder has, a leak down test measures how much pressure is lost.

Keen to stick with the xj once I get my 35s on it and its running good again
They may fit 35's easily but they need it to go the same places an Xj will go on significanly smaller tyres....

Doing the motor swap over head gasket as its cheaper and the. Motor has boiled so many times I can hear bottom end noises

I love my Cherokees don't get me wrong but I have to disagree with the gq haters

Gqs are the best 4x4 ever made in my opinion

If I did the things my mate does in his gq my diffs would be stuffed shocker bolts snapped off unis broken

They ate bullet proof drive lines

I would still take a jeep over one cause its a jeep thing not cause there better

I agree with the GQ drive line being incredibly strong, however if you don't go stupid with Tyre choices the old cherokee in standard trim will take you most places very reliably and fit down those tight tracks, not to mention turn on a dime that the big boys just won't.

Not a GQ hater but
A properly setup XJ will spank a GQ.
Yes GQ are strong - But Strength isn't everything.
Either get over the GQ & build the XJ right or ....
