Default Dana 44 in 2.7CRD

Okay, I got caught!

I thought I had a Dana 35 rear and ordered a replacement pinion seal. When it arrived, it looked way too small. After some extensive Googling, i eventually found my Jeep's original build sheet, and it has a Dana 44/226M rear axle fitted! Interesting, because it does not "look" like the Dana 44 in the identification pictures I've seen.

The correct pinion seal is now on order. (Anybody need a Dana 35 seal?? )

Taking a longer term view, I eventually want to put in an Eaton TrueTrac. Do all Dana 44's have 30-spline axles?

No and Yes. Apparently non rubi 44's are 30 spline. Assuming all is stock your diesel most likely has a 30 spline however the JK Rubis have 32 splines (mine for sure is 32).

Just learnt something new. It's the Dana 44A (aka Dana 44HD) which is quite different from the Dana 44.

Yeah, figured that. Interestingly, I have also figured out that the axles are common between the open and varilok centres. It makes the swap substantially simpler, if I go that way.

Also, the pinion seal equivalents:
Mopar 5072265AA
SKF 18701
Timken 100712V

Interesting.

In the parts list I have, there are three axles for each side:
5012820AA & 5012821AA - Right & left for DRM axle
5012850AA & 5012851AA - Right & left for DRK axle
5012872AA & 5012873AA - Right & left for both DRK & DSC
(DRM=Dana 35C/194MM, DRK=Dana 44/226MM & DSC=Vari-lok Progressive)

I wonder what is different between the 5012850AA & the 5012872AA? I can see I'm going to have to pull out an axle to see what I have.
