Default Jeep Wrangler Jk Death wobbles

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2010 Jeep wrangler JK unlimited, When I first bought it I got a 2inch lift and a Uneek bull bar no other changes. I have only just started getting the death wobbles really bad. Mechanic thinks biggest number 1 problem is because it has factory wheels and tires. Any ideas on what the death wobbles could be caused by and what size wheels/tires you would recommend for a 2inch lift?

Help please : (

He did check those things he said I will need to get a new track bar he said the ball joints are fine but reckons that getting new tires would be his first recommendation all though I have been reading a lot of forums and a lot of other jeeps get dw regardless or wheel or tire size : /

First step would be to get a new mechanic. Where abouts are yiu located? There are a few really good experienced Jeep workshops spread around the country.

First step is check all ball joints, tie rod ends and track bar joints for any movement as mentioned above. I do this by setting up my phone in video mode and recording each joint whilst rotating the steering back and forth half a turn. Search for SeaComms on youtube and there is a pile of videos on there of my front end looking for the source of tje wobbles. Mine was worn ball joints in the end combined with worn tie rod and draglink ends with inly 48000km on them - the factory component's rarely outlast the warranty so if yours have not been replaced they should be. All were replaced under warranty and problem gone.

Also Check wheel alignment, should be 1 to 3mm toe in and around 4° caster. Most likely will be lower caster which whilst will not cause death wobbles will allow them to happen easier.

Also might be worth explaining what you mean by death wobbles as their is a lot of misinterpretation around.

Death wobbles is a violent side to side shaking of the whole front end that usually starts around 80kmh or higher, often triggered by a bump or a bend and will only stop by bringing the vehicle to an almost complete stop.

I live in Canberra got any recommendations?
The first time it happened was on the highway to sydney I just came off a bridge doing around 110 and it was out of control going side to side I struggled to hold the wheel I tried breaking it got worse then tried accelerating but that didnt work either so had to brake until I was at a stop then it stopped completely. It has done it maybe 3 to 4 times on the highway since and a few times in canberra when doing 80, now I can feel it slightly in the steering wheel after bumps like just driving around canberra I can feel it all most go to start but then stop.

If its done it that many times now, the bolt hole would be flogged out,
Also check for ball joint wear, the factory units are rubbish and wear out. You only need one of the 4 ball joints to have play and it will start to bring on the wobble
