ATTEN SUB CJ
Dave,
the maiden voyage almost turned out to be the last voyage - I was totally stuffed and we didn't get away to TT until 10.30pm on Friday night, so I was trying out the auto pilot on the way up. Hickey and Matt were behind me watching as I tried to hit every rock wall on the Putty Road. All in all not a very smart thing to do.
Anyway first impressions on SUB CJ: it was initially a little more "basic" than I remembered (given that I've only driven a new Peugot 205GTI in the last year). The biggest difference I found was the gearing (gone to 35' MT/R and 4.56 ratios) - I found 1-3 gears too low and that I could be really lazy and go up all hills in 5th or 4th if they were steep. I think this will be a case of modifying my driving technique to suit the vehicle.
It certainly has heaps more power, but I didn't push it. Also with the new exhaust it has a much healthier and louder note.A couple of cases of overheating meant that the Suburban support crew were required - it's a pity I can't take them with me everywhere for the next 6 months. The brakes and steering were a bit squishy, the latter being due in part to not having a steering stabiliser fitted (when I had the Rancho one fitted before it made a huge difference) and not running any swaybars yet. Didn't get the chance to try out the flex, but the YJ springs are a much softer ride.
It looks great and can't wiat to get it back properly. Looks like Jambo will be the next big run: usual problem of being in the wrong state.
Hopefully by then all the goodies will be fitted and working.
I'll keep you posted.
Cheers
Mike
