Default Diesel xj q's from newbie

hi all, I'm from the states and found an '87 xj diesel w/a 5 speed for sale. I know that the diesel was only offered in the states for a few years so it's more difficult to find parts, but I have always been parcial to an oil burner and couuldn't pass up the opportunity to have one. I had a few Q's
1.) what should I look for problem wise with the diesel (2.1L?)
2.) what tends to be the problems
3.) Has any one ran bio-D in it, and how has it affected it

thanks in advance

Don't listen to Gildo, he's can't decide if the diesel engine blows or sucks . If you do a search here you'll find pretty quicly that leaky heads shows up a lot. Can't comment fully as my XJ choice, initially to be a diesel, changed and I got the petrol.

Since you're new here, a g'day and welcome and some Aussie hospitality: we never got the 2.1L (Renault made) diesel, I believe that was a US and Europe offering only. Our first diesel XJ was the 2.5L which appeared in 1987 in the US and as we didn't get the XJs until 1995 anything we can tell you is about the wrong motor anyway if it really is the 2.1L motor. Head over to http://www.naxja.org, they might be able to help you out a bit more on that particular motor.

Seems that the fumes enter the cab and quickly affect the sanity of the driver/owner that diesel motors despite their crap performance and hugely expensive spare parts along with the VM diesels ability to blow head gaskets, warp heads and drain bank balances are actually GOOD???
$900 for a starter motor?
$4k for an injector pump?
New heads- NAH $10k for a replacement motor....
Yeah right, really good Jeep.

Thumbs down

Hi,

US XJs had a Renault 2.1L diesel fitted back when Renault owned a fair stake in AMC Jeep.
During the 1990s when Chrsyler owned Jeep, 2.5L VM diesels were fitted to XJs since VM was owned by Chrsyler who owned Jeep.

The two motors have almost nothing in common.

As far as I know there are no 2.1L XJ diesels in Australia.

Sorry can't help.

DXJ

PS, Is there any way to filter out Gildo's posts?
