TJ alternator upgrade
Hey guys,
Who has upgrade their TJ (2003) alternator?
What option did you go? Did you get it local or import? Any gotchas you found out (I.e upgrade battery senor? Or)
I’m Geelong Vic. So know any good auto elecs, as I may look to have the wiring all upgrade as well.
Any advice welcome. Currently looking at a mean green, but it’s cash! So any options welcome.
(Yes I need it I’ve got 400w inverter, winch, lights, fridge, android double din head unit, usually charging iPhone, ipads, cameras and drones )
Thanks lads and ladies.

Hi Neomut,
From what I have read the smallest alternator on a TJ is 80 amps. You must be using some serious power to need more than 80 amps. I would just check that one you have is working correctly. I managed to squeeze in a 650 CCA battery to help the winch and I also run a secondary 130 amp AGM battery, 20 amp DC - DC charger, inverter, fridge, lights etc and have no worries with the standard alternator. Check your elec system connections, battery terminals, if you have an issue there a bigger alternator isn't going to help.

thanks mate.
. I don’t have the room for anothe battery under the hood and I’ll not run one in the cab. Also I prefer solid batteries (ie optima) the jeep gets driven pretty hard.
As for draw, I’ve abiut 30-40 amps of lights, 400w inverter (which is over 30amp draw), fridge, 5-10amps of device charging, stereo speakers many amps there, then add a winch recovering, on top of standard duties...
I need an upgraded alternator.
Electrical system is solid, though stock (no big “3” upgrade) though I have updated some of the battery wiring to higher gauge due to the winch. Ive a a clean well grounded signal. There is no problem yet, however, the stock system is very taxed.
I’ve looked at using the multi stack optima battery’s and just fabbing the bracket tonthenotherwise of the jeep, however, I’ve decided against it.
So upgrade alternator with a strong battery - that’s the solutions I’ve decided on.

Hi Wes,
A handy bit of info re the 117 amp alternator. Its hard to work out where the engineers were at when they designed the wranglers. Some bits are so over engineered its ridiculous and then other bits (elec wiring) for one seems to be underdone. Nothing some quality shed time cannot overcome.
