Exclamation Strange noise when starting/changing gears

Hey all,

Just need some quick advice. I'm in Brissy and have an appointment to take my TJ to Hammond's 4wd in a week, but I've had a weird noise lately and am unsure about driving it at all -- let alone to Capalaba. I'll call Hammond's on Monday but I thought I'd try my luck getting some advice here.

The noise happened 3 times prior to today. It's a high pitched sound coming in short bursts, quite loud. All those first three times it happened on starting the engine, and each of those tubes the car had been parked in hot sun for at least 3 hours.

Today the car started fine (parked under building, full shade, for 15 hours) but when I turned onto the main road and accelerated it started making the noise again. I think it might have coincided with the automatic transmission changing from 2nd to 3rd. It stopped by the time I found a side street to turn into but started again when I'd rounded the corner.

I used the sports gears to drive home, putting the car manually in first and second, no further noises. I'm unsure if that was bc of the slow speed, the engine warming up or the manual gear changes.

I've checked the fluid levels and the transmission and engine oil are both low for hot oil but not for cold oil. Bc the car was only running for 5 minutes I'll check the levels again when the engine is cold to be more sure. There's been no check engine light and while the fuel is low, it was a long way from empty (1/4 tank left).

Any ideas? Similar experiences?
