Rod very interesting, mine hasn't given any hassles but some pics would be great. If you can't get them to come up on the thread email them to me and I'll stick them up for you.
Missed your original post so been catching up.

The oil/coolant cooler has indeed a dual purpose.
Since its takes relative long get the oil up to operational temperatures and the coolant reaches its operational temperature quicker than the oil the coolant heats the engine oil during the start phase.
Don't get fooled by the small size of the heat exchanger. Coolant transfers heat 10x times faster than air.
The problem is the relative small temperature difference between oil and coolant. So adding an extra oil cooler is ok. By determining the position (before or after the coolant /oil cooler) you can adjust to the major climate.
Blowing the oil cooler indicates a serious problem!
The cooler must have a burst pressure rate of 10bar! Check your oil system. The relieve pressure valve should operate around 6.3bar!
Check this valve!

Hey DW,
It maybe that the wj has a different cooler to the XJ. I dont know.
The coolant pipe fittings will corrode & I guess that is what they may be referring to. Had to replace mine. Thanks MM for the replacement.
You are right about the strength on the oil side. It would only fail by mechanical damage or some sort of fatigue. The Orings on either end can be a problem though.
The oil heating is very important in cold weather even here in Australia.

Hmmm. DW (that's DieselWeasel not Death Wobbles) seems to have a point.
I recently towed a heavy load up a steep hill for a long time and the temp went way up, gearbox started to sing and at the top I had P/S fluid sprayed all over the inner left wheel well. Oil pressure was way down for a few minutes but as she cooled down the oil pressure came back up to normal. My second injector was puffing out some fresh black death as well. (I got the reaming kit and bolt, fixing it this weekend)
I figure that's all to be expected when on full throttle in second gear for 10 minutes.
