I admit to not fully inspecting my harmonic balancer yet

however, have inspected and changed (or not) originals on older vehicles than this

I prefer to establish the precise problem (if I can) before change any original parts

depending on yr experience, changing out the HB is a more significant job

therefore, a really good inspection/prying is worth it... imo

there should be no sign of cracking or flexing

Thanks again. HB is showing signs of external material breakdown so I will go ahead and replace it along with VC. I'm reasonably proficient on the tools and always willing to tackle something new.

I dont have enough knowledge/experince of these motors

other than to say the following;

* have read the front oil seal is worth changing at this time
* have NOT read of substantial timing chain stretch issues on these engines

in the case of some engine timing chains, they can be "life of engine"

others stretch chains, some want new gears & chains together

others can advise, personal choice I guess

If you change the balancer it would always be wise to put a new seal in, also the timing chain on this engine are a no maintenance item. So unless you are rebuilding the motor or have excessive chain rattle then they can be considered good for the life of the engine.

The useful thing about the method of operation of the cam sensor through the distributer drive is ignition timing can be always be correctly set for crank position even if the chain does wear and stretch some.
