Cars ran great without them for a long time so it is just cosmetic and makes it look like a nice clean plastic block instead of a complex series of processes which can go wrong.

Been doing a bit more thinking about this. ~ Dont want to cause you grief drover!! The only negative thing I can think is that the paint on the bonnet may suffer from extra heat over time.

I think that is the main reason most cars have them now. Noise reduction and paint protection.

Noise almost certainly, the heat I think more like containing it to engine here in QLD the sun cooks the bonnet more ........................ Been looking at the temps under the lid and no great change at all but if I was a bit more pedantic I would stick a monitor there to see how quick it cools after shutting down.....

I doubt heat would be an issue, plus your bonnet is insulated.

On all the pre-plastic cars I've owned (with naked engines), heat never caused paint problems on the bonnet, nor in the engine bay for that matter. It makes more sense to me that engine heat should vent naturally rather than being trapped under the shroud. Components underneath it must get mighty hot.

I agree it probably does more harm than good in our climate mate. But retaining heat in a stopped engine may be of some benefit in those really cold northern hemisphere climates where they sometimes use engine block heaters through winter. You wouldn't want your engine block frozen from sitting in a car park after driving it to work for example.

Yep like the ZG, WG and Colorado the WK2 has a naked engine............ many moons ago would park at Persiher, throw blanket over bonnet and windscreen, start car in morning let run for ages till I get get the blanket unstuck...lol,lol,lol...... Mind the Fire Truck would be plugged into the 240v for a heater element in sump.
