Nice write up and glad it all worked out. For what it's worth on the 2005-06 KJ 2.8L CRD at least there is no problem doing a short engine run (30 seconds or less) at idle without having the serpentine belt installed as long as the engine has coolant and the AC is off. This will not trigger any codes and is a good check on the timing belt install in addition to turning the engine over manually several times to make sure the belt is fully seated, tensioner is properly set, and everything lines up after rotation.

Default Another timing belt saga

Hi Kim,
Very helpful thread, I have 2002 2.5CRD with timing belt failure. As it turns out Albion Jeep hadn't bothered to fit new belt at 100k service! I'm in Tas now & no local mechanic will touch it, so I will have to do it myself. Otherwise the Jeep is in excellent condition, only 148K kms, 2 trips around Aus, 4" crdstu lift & snorkel, nudge bar, skid plates. I'm almost at the stage of removing the rocker box to see what is needed. It happened at low speed so maybe the damage is minimal, no clatter and motor turns freely, had refuelled only a few kms earlier and thought it was bad fuel blockage. Fitted new filter and bled, no go, plenty of engine turning over so hoping not too much damage, hopefully just rockers. I was wondering if you would sell/hire/lend the specialist VM tools. Hopefully within a week I will be able to order from VM UK all that I need.
regards

Default Help. CRD won't start.

Hi Dodger.

That is bad news indeed. Mine did the same thing, could turn engine over freely so hopefully it is just the rockers for you.

Might be worthwhile replacing the water pump at same time as that is only accessible by removing the timing belt.

Have sent a PM regarding tools.

Hi Dodger,
About half of the KJ diesels that come in with a stripped t/belt have bent exhaust valves, all have broken exhaust rockers. The two KJs I currently have in the workshop, one has bent valves, the other is good.

Once the cylinder head is off I do recommend you take it into a known good cylinder head repairer, in Perth I use Head Exchange (which doesnt help you though).

The other advantage in getting a cylinder head mob to look at the head is you can get both the cylinder head and cam head cleaned by them as at your km's all the intake will be full of black grud.

And yes do the water pump (tensioner and both idler pulleys) while you are at it.

Regards
Daz
