On a non Jeep vehicle, Audi Q7 TDI, I had the same problem.

Turned out to be battery drain when sitting overnight or longer.

In my case it was drawing power from the AMP.

By the time it started the alternator would charge the battery up again and everything looked good.

I determined the battery drain after I purchased a voltage checker and started checking the battery voltage afternoon and mornings, or after the vehicle had sat for a few days. It was dropping to low 11’s from memory.

Not saying you have the same problem, but worth looking at.

Battery 4 years old, get a new one but make sure it has more than 800cca. Batteries don't last much beyond 3 years in a CRD due to the small engine bay and the resultant buildup of heat.

Hi Lads.
Went to start it this morning. Temp was about 0c. Very sluggish. Drove 15 mins to supermarket in the dark, lights on and heater. Tried it at supermarket and it spun over fine.

I will have it checked out on the battery machine and then I can only think I will need an auto electrician to check for a drain or a voltage drop to the starter.

I am reluctant to buy a new battery if I do not need one. They are expensive.

I think you’d be able to check those things with a multimeter if an auto electrician costs much. You’re paying to rent their multimeter and brain - and multimeters are pretty cheap you can get the necessary brain-power from YouTube I’m sure!

My money is on battery and battery drain. One thing that did help my Audi after I replaced the battery, was locking it with the remote each night when I put it in the garage. Appears the vehicle was always in some state of ‘awake’ and locking it with the remote shut down certain accessories. In my case the AMP.

That is good advice as many modules wait in standby, until usually between 90secs to 3minutes after locking.

Suprisingly no one ever thinks of this: glow plug control module. It will always fail.
