Default DPF clean vs DPF delete

The dilemma of choice. I have a blocked DPF. I can pay $800 for removal and clean or can go down the path of DPF delete and remap ECU for $1999.

What would be the preferred choice and what have others done.

Will the car run? is the DPF blocked or just bringing up an alarm, can you force a regen?
If you can get it running, you could try putting a heavy load on the back e.g car trailer with car on it, or a large caravan, then take it for a long run including some big hills. That will clean it out, get some serious heat happening.
