It's funny....it's a big job, but it's somehow a relief to do it when you initially think that you've done a head-gasket...

Do you guys see changing the oil cooler as preventive maintenance at almost 240.000 km ?
My radiator is dirty inside (and leaking), I plan to seriously flush the entire system, then install a new radiator.
Should I change the oil cooler while I am at it to avoid any troubles in the future ?
It would be a big weekend job, change radiator, clean intake manifold and change oil cooler.

If you are taking the intake manifold off, I would definitely do the oil cooler. Knowing how hard it is to remove, it would be so much easier with the intake manifold off the engine.

So I should just do it when I muster the time and courage to take the manifold off to clean it inside?

Can't hurt.

If you are going to pull the inlet manifold off, most definitely.

Be warned pulling though, pulling off the inlet manifold is not for the faint of heart. It is a much bigger job than it looks to get it off of the engine.

Once you have it off it can also be a bugger of a job to get it clean too.

And another one bites the dust...

My oil cooler has just gone @ 210K

MB NZ quoted $390 (NZ Stock) [Part# 6461880301]
Jeep NZ quoted $530 (Ex USA - 2wks)

Appears they can be found online for around $150 NZ delivered (1wk - 2wks)

EDIT: Be sure to include the gasket!! $10.30NZ [Part # A6111840280]

Was a massive shock to find issue! and dreaded the head gasket but finding info here has been awesome

Jeep is now in shop for confirmation of diagnosis, parts replacement and CLEAN UP!

Thanks for posting details everyone!

Mine went earlier this year too.
It's only this site that allowed me a possible diagnosis, and the WJ is running good again (apart from a death wobble at about 70km/h).
But that's a different matter....
