Which leads me hoping nothing more sinister is happening but given the volume of oil displaced in the short time I'm at a loss to explain otherwise. Can't see it being headgasket related. Could be related to poor sealing of the cooler to the housing it bolts too which is not good or corrosion on the cooling side at the housing which again is not good. Not sure if water and oil ports are close enough for that to contribute. Fingers crossed we were just unlucky enough to get one of the last dodgy coolers running aroudn that for some reason were nto removed from circulation.

Oh for the record too for following readers although the part itself and associated repair should still be warranted it is with a dealer over 4 hours from where I live and regardless of the outcome the transport cost is my cost so it is unlikely this will be addressed within a warranty repair.

Fester, had a look in the parts list and it doesn't look like it would be suitable for a mod. Page 161 of the parts list has a good drawing of it.

Oh and it's called an oil cooler..........Jeep# 5080402AA Cooler,Oil

PS: Any good shows on in Brissie ????

Ah yes see that pic now. Probably discounts my original thought that it would be nice to be able to drill and tap the ports that feed the cooler so it was all hose connection based but obviously this would not be possible unless the whole timing case was removed from the front of engine.

Have been talking to another CRD owner who is not too keen on the cooler principal and we are thinking of a blanking plate. Based on the pic we could have a machined groove for the coolant passage (or simply a tapped hole if it can all line up) and corresponding tapped holes with screw in hole tails for hoses for the oil. In this idea a leakage is less likely and if did occur would be less likely to contaminate the other fluid system, rather would just leak out.

I wouldn't be keen to simply block the coolant flow until I could determine where that particular coolant path comes/goes in case it could introduce a hot spot somewhere else.

Looking at the pic there are 3 holes on the mating face of cooler which would be oil in/out and coolant either in or out as there is an external pipe for coolant on the back side of the cooler. So the blanking plate say 10-15mm thick could have 3 holes aligned in the right spots and either sealed with RTV, a gasket material or "o" rings with hose connections on other side. If we don't need a machined path I can cut a simple plate at work now with suitably positioned holes and simply tap them to suit fittings.

Question is is it suitable to route holes to a front cooler and how big a cooler can be fit on front and how big does it really need to be. I was looking at the space previously for an extra tranny cooler if needed but it may have to be sacrificed for engine oil.

Brissie reference????

Brissie reference......you could take a couple of shows and nights in a flash Motel while it's in the workshop..

If you Google the part number you will find a reference which gives dimensions for the cooler, didn't save the link though, but the prices on some of them were scary.

Yeah don't think it'll be going to the shop. Considering it cost me $150 for the excess tow from Rainbow to Gympie due to mileage excess over coverage of about 30k's (inc van) I don't even really want to think about the cost for 4+ hours to Toowoomba.

I've seen a couple of coolers about but not full measurements. Not hard to copy once off though. Seen several China knockoffs as you would expect but have seen the OEM brand in US for $140USD and in German ebay for about 60 Euros. So not bad if I have to go that way.

so the thought is that the oil cooler somehow leaked into the coolant?

I don't think that is possible from what I've seen of the oil cooler. I would think a head gasket is blown.
Are you sure its engine oil in the coolant and not diesel fuel?

I think there is an 'O' ring involved which causes problems. There is a post here somewhere about it, just haven't the time to search it out. It isn' t common though, thankfully, still haven't figured out why they need it.

The 2.7 CRD is differn't to the 3lt CRD, but then I don't know if the 3lt has an engine mounted oil cooler similar to the 2.7
