Default AC compressor failed

The AC in my 2014 GC started to hiss a few months ago and now runs warm, Jeep dealer put dye in and identified that the compressor is leaking and the entire unit needs to be replaced. They've quoted $1800 to fix it - is that reasonable? How big of a job is it? - im told its not covered under the extended warranty because of the nature of the part...

I'm keen not to spend $1800 just before christmas.. but I am travelling to Airlie Beach in a few weeks from Sydney.. so i dont fancy sitting in a car thats also 40c..

I’d be taking it to an an auto A/C place for a 2nd quote & asking them what sort of warranty they provide on their repairs.

Cheers

Yeah, don't do it through Jeep, they will over charge and probably still stuff it up. Try an aircon specialist.

I spoke to them again, the said its the condensor and e-compressor. The genuine part is $1200 and its $600 in labor as the dash has to be removed.. im pretty shocked. It's booked in for next week as they cannot do today - I plan on getting a report and speaking to Jeep Australia directly to make sure its right.. but damn - $1800.

I’d still be going to an auto air con place & getting someone who mainly works on aircon systems to have a look at it. Pulling the dash apart would be to gain access to the blower fan, evaporator unit & refrigerant control unit ( tx valve/capillary) whilst the condenser is located in front of the radiator.
You also need to ask what warranty comes with the repairs.

I'd be contacting FCA through their complaints portal to see what help they are prepared to offer before the repair is started:

Are FCA known for assisting with these types of items? The car has done 105K in 4.5 years - but im still pretty shocked at the price.

If its the tx valve or evaporator, it is in the dash and needs to come out. I had the works done, txvalve, evaporator unit, condenser and compressor replaced under warranty many years back under warranty, on troubleshooting a resonating sound.

Quite heartbreating seeing the dash out.

Dealer did say it was at least $2.5k job.

If you are paying for it, get a second quote elsewhere.
