Its a standard adjustment on recirculating ball steering boxes ( what the XJ has). If there is no other obvious issues, then one can try screwing it in about 1/2 a turn & see if there is an improvement. I have done that on many steering boxes. The only exception are old Mercedes Benz & they need to be screwed out.
If the bearing/bush on the shaft is buggered it wont help. I recall MM had this problem.

Reviving an old thread here ... but handling has not been right for years and started to get even worse recently ... i took it to a shop a few years back to have my wheel alignment done, they assured me it was all fine "in the green zone". Didn't really question what "in the green" mean't to be honest, just took their word for it. Anyway, decided to measure the toe in myself last week and it was way out, toeing out instead of toeing in. Adjusted it to toe in by 1/8 myself and its a world better ... like a new Jeep Just wish i'd done it years ago!
