Default Questions about my New/second hand XJ

Hi everyone my names ben im new here.
Ive got a few questions about the xj 4.0l autoi picked up for $400 a couple of months ago.
So ive got the usual over heating problems when im doing tough beach driving but ive had a look at the thread on that but ive got a couple of others and im sick of looking through the massive list of threads trying to answer them.

1. What is it like to try and replace the rear engine seal in the car. I was thinking of just dropping out the gear box and i was hoping i wouldnt have to take the sump off.

2. The 'check engine light has come on a few times but i havent noticed any issues with the engine, ie. oil pressure is still good temp is ok and is still running fine. if i switch it off for 5 minutes and start it up again then its gone but while i was up teewah beach last week end it came on and when i put my foot down it would choke a bit then back fire through the snorkel and then it would go fine and it did this every time you put your foot down for a bit but then it was ok but the light was still on and again everything looked ok. so i left it over night then started it up and the light was still on and did the same but then on the way home it was running fine and the light just went away.

any help would be appreciated

cheers

Welcome to the forum Ben.
Your rear main oil seal is a two piece item. You do not need to take the trans out to replace. You drop the sump and remove the rear main bearing cap. One half of the seal goes into the cap. The other side is tricky as you have to carefully punch the seal around till you can grab it with pliers and pull it out. New seal install is a reverse procedure. Use soap to lubricate it to slip in. There are you tube videos on how to do it.
Try to pull any error codes from the PCM first to try and see what is triggering your engine light

Regards Rusty

Dropping the sump to do the rear main is pretty easy, it's messy as it continues to drip but easier than pulling the gearbox as it's a heavy bugger and you neeed to drop the driveshafts and the t-case off of it first. To get the sump off jack the Jeep up by the frame and disconnect the shocks to let the front axle hang, it gives more room. When I had an XJ with 5" of lift the sump would just fall out when the rear main needed changing.

Cheers
Steve

Check out Gojeep's site for details on both the RMS replacement and for retrieving the codes....

$400?

Goddamn!

Choking could be anything from a blocked fuel filter imparing fuel flow rate or anything else, gonna have to put your thinking cap on and test everything.
