Default Big end noise in a 4.7

Been quoted in excess of 7k to remove/rebuild/install - if all is well with the crank.
Any pensioner friendly alternatives?

It's a nice car with most everything working except for the tap, tap, tap from the bottom end....

or junk it......TIA

At 7k I would junk it. A recon motor could be had for much less. A smaller car perhaps?

Depends on how well you know the car. If you know everything else is good or new then $7K is potentially cheap motoring for another several years. What would you get for yours as is? I suspect not much. So changeover price may be similar depending on what you find. I believe the 8cyl GC's don't sell for a lot.

We have a 2002 KJ CRD owned since new. Spent a lot on it but we know it from front to back. Put too much into it to sell it. We also just bought a 2003 GC Limited CRD with low km's on it. In really good condition and got it at a good price. So you will find the odd good buy out there. When purchasing a second hand car you don't really know what you are getting though so get anything checked out thoroughly.

Shouldn't be that much. If it's just the big end, the bearings and new bolts is about $200. If the crank needs working then the engine will need to come out. Removing an engine is probably $3-500 from a mechanic, plus work to the crank and block. I'd be guessing about $1500 all said and done. Not a full rebuild but fixes the tapping problem.
Have they told exactly where the noise is coming from?

Its a tough choice, i went for a Engine from a wreck. 77000ks installed drive in drive out for 4k. I heard and seen the engine running before i bought it. I have heard that if these knock you need a complete rebuild replacing the bearing will only stop the tapping for a little while.
