Squeaking/chirping wheels fixed by quick brake push... why?

Actually, we have had the block (5 acres, Dietz Ct) for nearly a year, had a contract to build but that went belly up, now re-submitting the plans for a much easier house that I can build myself (besides the compulsory trades of course).

So I've spent a few hours there lately because the driveway is looking a bit shabby after all that rain! Half the creek is full of my roadbase...hmm the joys...

Anyway it's a good workout if nothing else. Hopefully in a month or so we can start in earnest.

Hi guys... thanks for the tips...

Some more information and questions about the problem....

Whenever I drive for more than 10 minutes and get out of the car, I can smell the brakes, even if I have not been particularly braking hard. Is this normal? I.e. That you could actually scent the brakes every drive? (It's not totally overpowering, but noticable nevertheless).

If my pistons are the culprit, it is likely both LEFT and RIGHT front pistons would be playing up and squealing at the same time? It is hard to tell in the drivers seat, but I think it is coming from both sides.

P.S. My brake pads are Bendix, and are apparently fairly new (9 months ago). The mechanic said they were the non-asbestos ones.

Not sure mate... If you spent a lot of time in the mud and water, it may be a possibility that both are going out the door, but I would have thought it unlikely...
From the (TJ) FSM (the last bit sounds interesting) :

Possible causes for brake drag condition are:
- Seized or improperly adjusted parking brake cables.
- Loose/worn wheel bearing.
- Seized caliper or wheel cylinder piston.
- Caliper binding on corroded bushings or rusted slide surfaces.
- Loose caliper mounting bracket.
- Drum brake shoes binding on worn/damaged support plates.
- Misassembled components.

If brake drag occurs at all wheels, the problem may be related to a blocked master cylinder return port, or faulty power booster (binds-does not release).

Actually, it also says that the squeal can be caused by oil and grease etc on the linings. Probably doesn't explain the smell you're getting though...

Okay, so I'm taking it as the notable "smell" I speak of is not normal or typical for XJs?

Im thinking that the smell occurs when you have new pads on machined discs. Mine still smell after having close to 2000kms on the 4wd pads, and about 500kms on the metal king pads. Not sure why.. but I still get the smell now! Although.. it is slight;y less than when I got the new pads.

One suggestion is..

Take the wheel off and then the caliper/disc and check out the pads.. They might be glazed causing a higher temp in the pads. According to the brake ppl I saw:" improper bedding of the brakes causes the resin to come to the surface faster than if you bed them in slowly/correctly" Now.. I don't know what the resin is, nor the right way to bed brakes in according to the type of pads.

All else fails, go to a dedicated barke specialist.. They'll tell you probably all you'll need to know!

I have a similar problem toooo.
I have replaced the rotors with new BDA slotted ventilated ones and new bendiks pads... . same bloody thing.

would the wheel bearing have anything to do wit it..?
Can anyone tell me if missing some of the anti rattle pins would either...?
