Default Noisy Aircon.

Aircon noises.
I noticed last time I drove my MY14 diesel GC(last week), that when I got home and turned the radio right down I could hear a sort of "gurgly hissing" noise from the aircon unit behind the dash. It cycled in and out as if to coincide with the release on aircon gas into the evaporator. The aircon was working fine and I had it on auto as usual.
I lowered the temp settings to see if it changed things but it was just the same.
I started up the GC today and the same sound was being made......any ideas?
The aircon was still working fine pumping out plenty of cool/cold air.
GC has done 89,000 and not had a lot of use over the last 2 years, about 6000 km, all trip/towing.
John.

Could indicate the gas is getting low John, even though there's still enough left to blow cold. I had a similar symptom in another car and a regas sorted it. When was your ac last regassed? May not be it, but just a thought...

The hissing / gurgling is basically air being sucked through the system in place of gas, but a quick test at an ac place will soon confirm what's happening.

I think it is totally normal. The gurgling is boiling of refrigerant in evaporator as the system is equalising due to your turning the car off. A/C systems don't contain any air, even when there is a small leak as they are a pressurised system. The fact the supply air temp is fine, I believe there is nothing to worry about. Save your money until it's not blowing cold air. Depending on ambient conditions it should be around 4-6C but will vary on ambient conditions being the condensing temperature.

Farwest is right about running your A/C regularly but his explanation is little off with some terminology mixed up. Condenser does the heat rejecting, evaporator is what does the cooling.

I'm no expert but an ac tech explained to me that when gas is low the noise is pretty much like the system is sucking air, or hunting for gas. None of the systems in my cars make the hissing / gurgling sound as they have all recently been regassed. Inevitably most car systems need regassing every 3-5 years or so and I was curious as to when the OP's was last done.
