No manufacturer who wants to stay in business is going to willingly overspecify parts and in many cases the vehicle is built specifically from a list of existing corporate bits.

It simply wouldn't be feasible to develop new parts every time.... working with what they have is sometimes the only choice if they want to keep the end cost under control. Using what you have / know is also fast which is always a concern especially if money is tight.

Yes - Jeep could have fitted D60's standard and could have used Atlas TCases and Allison automatics etc but then we'd be whinging that they were too expensive and why would the 'average owner" need all that stuff.

The JK is what it is........ a cobbled up collection of parts that represents a crucial turn around in Jeeps commercial fortunes. IMHO its a cost effective - capable vehicle when used as it was desined for.

Anything extra we get out of them, and the consequences of pushing the boundaries are on our heads. My neighbor asked one day "'why do you have to work on it all ths time - is it a bad car ? ", I explained to him that if you push any car as hard as we push our JK's then you HAVE to expect breakages and issues" - he came out wth me once and he understood exactly what I meant.

Now when exactly do my new super mega bits arrive ?

End Rant.
well said mate

Ford's v6 CRD does 6.5 l/100km, and with a 75-litre fuel tank has 'theoretical' driving range of 1154km off one fill.

Ford charges $3250 more for this motor, Chrysler charges $4000 more for I4 CRD.

The Wrangler is a fantastic car in almost every respect but both current motors let this car down.

If we don't expect Chrysler to do better, we won't get better.

/**End Rant**/
