It would be good to have a JK Rubicon in a CRD engine.
Don't like my chances though?

I've toyed with the idea of building up a sport to Rubicon spec using factory components. I think it would be cheaper than an engine swap with a Rubicon. The minimum components you would need->
- Rubi Transfer case approx. $2500
- Mopar Dana44 up front approx $3000 to suit Eaton electric locker.
- Mopar Dana44 rear approx $2000 to suit Eaton electric locker.
- Front and Rear Electric Lockers (Don't know price maybe $1600 for both).
- 4.11 Diff Re-gear
- Sway bar disconnects.
- Labour and miceleneous electric parts and switches.
- Axles?

Of course you don't have to use factory bits but it wouldn't then be a stock Rubi would it? I think if you used as many Mopar bits as possible it would earn the Rubicon sticker.

from allpar.com

A diesel is being looked at, but needs to pass emissions at reasonable cost.

VM Motori, now 50% owned by Fiat Powertrain, dominates Chrysler/Jeep in Europe. A Fiat diesel is reportedly being tested by Siemens for US certification in the 2012 Wrangler.

I was a bit surprised at the "morons" accusation. I'm actually quite happy with a 4 cylinder diesel. Cheaper registration. And compared to the old Iron Duke motor I had in my CJ7, heaps of power. Not to mention better fuel economy.
