oil viscousity has little to do with the amount of lubrication an oil can provide these days. i think thicker oils in diffs are more to quieten them down for joe blog end consumer who doesn't like hearing any mechanical noise.
Does the LSD oil actually matter? I didnt think the JK had a clutch type LSD i thought it was electrical courtesy of the ESP?

When i took the diff cover off it was mechanical, locking teeth in fact. Apparently, you need to use an additive, but like you said it is probably more to do with noise than anything else but i am no expert

read your user manual. it actually tells you to use the heavier oil if you are towing. heavy offroad work is the same thing. but it's up to the individual i guess.

Like david said. "it is up to the individual" and how much the marketing has caputured the imagination.
Any good quality gear oil will do do the trick.

I am running Penrite full synthetic 80/140 in my rear diff.
I have the factory rear locker, same as the rubi but 3.73 ratio.
I have never had a problem with the locker operating cold or hot and don't expect to.
I changed to the 80/140 to follow the manual recomendation and it was time to check the diffs after some deep water crossings.
From memory the manual does state 75/140W 'full synthetic' when towing....
I do a bit of towing so like the idea of having the good stuff.

Mate i would love to know whereabouts in the manual it said that as i could not find anything and i checked over and over and the best i could find is 80w-90 with no mention of which system your running.
It also does not mention anywhere the diff capacities front and rear which was a real pain as i changed the front diff cover to the solid brand and the fill hole is 70mm higher
