Just one of those things on a manual JK that requires regular adjusting.
A mechanic friend of mine showed me how to adjust it and I was surprised how close to the drum you have position the shoes, just barely skimming the surface.
Will fit some new shoes when the winters over
Yep. When you have a crap park brake, you don't want to make the situation worse by neglecting the maintenance!

I hate to think what it is worth to repair or replace!

Yeah, it's scary aye.
But at least while it's working, there is no way the car will move unless you want it to.

It's exactly the same with the addition of an electric motor to wind up and release the cable. They still require the same regular adjustments

Electric motor. That makes sense. Probably a good idea.
Anyhow, as I said before, it works well so far. It's like it welds itself to the tarmac.
Maybe the idea can be applied to the JK. Couldn't be any worse.

Yes, the system would just need a hydraulic accumulator to over come that problem, they're readily available. Either gas or spring. I think the hydraulic handbrake principle is quite sound, it would take a bit of experimentation and trial and error to get it right and reliable. Might be a project for me next year...
