Drum/shoe style handbrakes on the rear wheels seem to need constant adjustment to work properly. That self tension mechanism on the JK just makes it alot worse. The Patrol / Defender style on the transfer output seem to be a more successful design. But what stops the wheels rotating in opposite directions? Never had any experience with this type...

My Jimny handbrake held perfectly, but again, drum rears.
And yes they need manual adjustment every 30,000km or so depending on how you use them. But you should be checking you pads that often anyway, it only takes a few seconds to wind up the adjuster while you're in there.

Hand brake on the JK? Ha, ha.....

Really? i have driven lots of manual cars in the past mostly disc brakes and hill starts with handbrakes have never been a issue in any of them besides the JK.

Sticking to 4x4s, I have owned 14 of them, not including countless company 4x4s, with various types of hand brakes. My JK is clearly the worst.
If my memory serves me correctly, I have had both the best and the second worst hand brake on transmission types, but I don't recall which one was which! ?
Anyhow, I personally prefer transmission brakes over any of the others, on 4x4s and commercial vehicles at least.

Another thing to note on transmission types of park brakes, they don't need to be an overly effective assembly as they gain a lot of mechanical advantage through the bevel gear ratio.

But its a drum brake

My new Cherokee is a disc handbrake and I have never had a hand brake work better! Mind you it is electrically operated and not cable.
