Default WH CRD Turbine Timer

I read somewhere after driving fairly hard you should let your jeep idle for a while before turning off.
I allways forget and wonder if it is really all that important?
If so is there a auto timer that could do it by itself?

As a general rule.....yes. Prevention is better than cure.
I always make a point of switching the engine of last thing, after grabbing my wallet, diary or whatever else I take inside. If towing, I always wait at least a couple of minutes.
Most car companies will tell you that there is no need for a modern day diesel to 'wind down' or cool down after a drive. My wife's 2 year old BM has an auto shut off when you stop the vehicle. There is an override button that you can press once the engine is started, which I always make a point of doing.

There are aftermarket turbo timers that you can install if you wish, however once you get into the habit of letting it cool down, it becomes second nature.
If you are towing heavy loads at freeway speeds consistently, a turbo timer is not a bad idea.

Cheers, Craig

If the car has been working, best cool it down. I have to pull up at the gate to open it & then to close it, then a 1/2 km drive to the house. I think that is sufficient cool down. I have a tractor that the turbo often glows red when working hard, I let it run to cool down for a good while when I pull it up.

If you are dragging up a big hill, working hard and when you get to the top you shut down then if you do that sort of thing often you will probably stuff things, if you belt along the freeway then tootle along at 60kph to your house and shut down, it will have all cooled down nicely and should cause no problem. What you are trying to do is let the engine cool down to normal operation temps before shut down, when you shut down straight after working hard or fast you stop the oil flow to the turbo which is exceedingly hot, but the bearings rely on the oil to cool, stop the oil and they stay hot for longer, not good.
Let it run for a minute or so and all is good.
While your at it when you start up let it run up for a minute or so before going, gives the oil a chance to get everywhere.
Oil burners like that sort of thing.................

When I tow the van & I need fuel I will back off & let the revs drop a few k's before the servo then let it idle for about a minute.

Not only are the bearings and internals running hot but moreso the oil that is in the turbo when shut down hot can carbonise and gum things up over time. The thing is to let the internals and the oil flowing through cool to a safer temp. Having said that I think turbo timers are overrated, even though I had them for years previously. In reality the light load cruising around at town speed is generally sufficient to get temps back to "normal". That and as mentioned the 30 seconds or so of organising yourself. Along the lines of what Drover said the only situation I really see the need for a timer is say you do big highway towing with a big van and your driveway is right off a higher speed limit and you then slog hard up your long driveway and straight into your shed. Really day to day it's not needed and aside from that a bit of common sense and a few extra seconds in your day is all you need.

Some cars don't lock and immobilise properly when a timer is activated and it is illegal to leave the car running and unattended in a public place

That reminds of the time in the Truck, pulled up jumped out, key in pocket, turbo timer running, load not ready, jump back in and head off to next pick up as I approach the stop lights I suddenly realize no key in ignition, engine then shuts down before I get key in hole, the traffic behind didn't think it was funny at all.
