Understood - good on ya for giving feedback to HQ.

Did they give you the courtesy feedback call two weeks after the job?
Everytime i buy parts from the dealer i get this call from a girl at HQ asking me how my 'experience' was. I tell her that the man who sold me the oil filter was very nice... LOL

I did a bit of internet research on this MB 229.31 and 229.51 specification (coz i'm about to dump a coupla hunge on this ridiculously expensive oil). It seems that MB 229.51 is the way to go. The main difference is that 229.51 has a >15000km service interval compared to the 229.31's <15000km service interval. Both are low ash for modern diesels.

From what i can tell, the only readily available (i.e. supercheap/autobarn etc) 5W30 weight oils with these specs are: Mobil 1 ESP and Shell Helix Ultra.

Castrol Edge SPORT has the 229.51 spec, but only in 0W40

9.5L of the stuff... man that's gunna kill me every service...

For interest, i bought the air and oil filters from the dealer on the weekend:
Air filter: $19, Oil filter: $45. Both are OE ones, and the oil one is a MB branded product. Ryco wanted $37 and $45 respectively...

Default progress

The Dealer has now conceeded that the oil type is incorrect, but is on their list from castrol that it is ok for that engine, castrol are sending a engineer to the workshop to re-evaluate to stocked oils to ensure they meet current spec's
Dealer is now replacing oil
replacing cv boot
replacing seal in turbo intake pipe
replacing intercooler pipe- these also have a know oil leak problem
fixing splash gaurds
Its amazing what talking to jeep HQ does

This is the only oil I will/have use in my WH CRD, You can only buy it in 20 litre drums (smallest), I take this oil & a Merc oil filter to every service, save a fortune & I know whats being used, I have also been called a fanatic since I change my oil & filter every 5,000km & clean & reoil the K&n min 10,000k's or sooner if a little dirty, Would love a snokel but will most likely be to old to drive by the time someone makes one. I just brought 2x20lt containers $450 ($11.24 lt) & brought bulk oil filters 10 off for $ 220 from Brisbane South side dealer, did the same for the XJ they were $7 each. Big out lay at 1st but save big $$ later.

May i ask where you purchased it from?
