This doesn't make sense to me. High pinion is in the front because it is stronger. Nissan and Toyota also use high pinion fronts. Later model Dana 30 and Dana 44 use the same size uni joints. The upper pinion bearing would surely get more oil when going up hill.
Lots of TJs are running low pinion D30 which is weaker, with 35s and if sensible they will last a long time. I did it in a CJ with 360 V8 for years. Your auto will be softer on the drive train as well. If you try hard enough you will break the D44.
I would like to hear the explanation for these failures.
