IMO it's definitely worth getting a cheap android device so you can use AlfaOBD.
I picked up a Veepeak Mini Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner on amazon for $25 and its working great for everything i've tried with AlfaOBD so far. Apparently some functionality requires a device that can do Pin Swapping, but I haven't found anything requiring this so far.
I've been using it monitor my DPF issues, and its giving me realtime info on 'Soot mass %', 'Particulate Filter exhaust gas temp', 'Resistance to flow in DPF', and 'Differential sensor pressure'.
I love that AlfaOBD can log the data, and will email it as a CSV or upload to Google Drive. Very handy to be able to look back at the data over a particular drive.
