Plastic fuel tanks
On the Labor day long weekend I noticed fuel on the floor of my tinny. I thought it was probably a leak at the joint of the fuel line & primer pump so I cut a little line off & replaced the hose clamps.
Yesterday I had the tank on the ground lying flat. it only had about 5 ltrs in it.
When I picked it up the bottom of it was wet with fuel. Bit of a surprise. On close inspection I found the plastic was cracked in a line across the bottom of the tank in an indent. It was actually a series of small (5-10mm) cracks. The tank is about 3 years old.
Later in the day I called by BCF in Shepparton (where I purchased it) & asked what was the warrantee situation. They said they wanted to inspect the tank, the warrantee was normally 12 months but if it was faulty they would replace it.
I took it in today. The staff were very helpful & agreed that the tank manufacturer would want the tank out of circulation & the tank was still well within its expected life span. They agreed that plastic welding the crack was not a good idea as it may make me liable if the cracking continued to grow. The were happy to replace it.
