Default Replace battery cables

Hi

2.5l CRD, just bought a new Optima D34 battery and my battery terminals do not reach. I knew this was going to happen based on research I did but now I need to replace the battery cables and terminals.

Has anyone done this, I guess I just buy new cables and leads and replace the ones that are there to starter motor and earth. How do I connect the other stuff in the looms to the new cables.

I also want to add a second battery and meet the seat one day so want to keep that in mind if o need special terminals etc to accomodate this later.

Any experience and tips in replacing the cables would be appreciated.

Thanks
Kim

Kim, I am in the process of kind off doing some of this as I am turning the battery through 90 degrees to run parallel to the long axis of the car (long and convoluted reasons). There's some number crunching in this to do with current carrying capacity when load increases in proportion to heat etc etc....x many times. I think it compounds the fickle mature of the a-stable electrics especially on the later models than the one you drive.

To your question and why I wrote this: I purchased the Projecta positive and negative terminals with HD slow blow fuses and side-ports for accessories to be added.

These fittings give a lot more reach to the leads and if you run the numbers on cross-sectional area of the actual terminals compared to stock they are far greater than stock cross-section and allow easy addition of accessories with protection where it should be - right at the battery.

They may give you enough.
These are 4wd rated and quite tough units.

I plan on crimping (I have an hydraulic crimping tool) at the terminals and original battery cable intersect .....then soldering just these ends with a heat sink collar I will make out of pure copper removable collar....then heat shrink x 3 layers after that but it seems crimping is regarded as adequate in some circles.
I hope that gives you something you can use.

Hi.

Thanks those terminals look pretty good.

I am thinking to try and fit the second battery here if I am going to all this trouble.

I am going to measure up and see if the battery holder will fit.
