Default VM-TD Head gasket leaks oil

My 2.5 VM-Diesel started to leak quite some oil out of the head gasket (4th cylinder) but doesn't have any other signs for a blown gasket like coolant bubbling, water in oil or overheating. Mechanic thinks he can just tighten the head since spares here in NZ are blimming expensive:

head gasket set: NZ$590

head bolts: NZ$49 each (aparently he needs 18 to be replaced)

and at the end (after he takes everything apart) there might be the bill for one or more cracked heads .... Do we really have to spend that money on the gasket and the bolts???? The garage wants another 2.000 bucks for labour.

Guys, anyone got some thoughts on this for me? Would really appreciate it and it's fairly urgent as well since it's our one and only vehicle (... and no, I can't afford a new one right now)...

Best you have a look at the VM diesel thread. Arcopiston in Lithuania are good.

Thanks for that - ARCOPISTON just sent me a quote for the postage: 72GBP - that's around 150 bucks; quite a bit but envelope is presumably gold plated.

Ebay-GB got more guys with the same offer and ways cheaper postage.

ARCOPISTON sends by DHL. You get your parts in about 3 days.

There is a discussion group for VM diesels on yahoo, you could try asking there.

When you find a good supplier please add details to the diesel thread so we all can benefit.
