td i have an 07 manual, i assume we have the same clutch. when i was pricing a spare parts kit a while ago the spare parts bloke said a full clutch kit of clutch plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing was about 500 bucks, so although it may be a weakness at least replacementcost is down. the problem is the flywheel .we run a dual mass flywheel apparently, which can't be skimmed and if your worn clutch plate puts a few wear marks on it it has to be discarded. new ones run into about 2500 bucks i have been told, but don't quote me on that. expensive because they come with the ring gear and damper springs in them. but if you are kind to your clutch it shouldn't be a problem.

Heck if anything that expensive happens to mine and looks like it will keep happening, and warranty doesn't cover it, it will be time to screw the warranty completely with a V8 conversion and some other gearbox. I would probably cover a lot of of the cost by selling the minivan motor & box anyway.

here it is on mine. tho the clearance between the pipe and bell housing is about 2cm. they might've been fixed many things in the 08 builds, mine Jun 08.

Thanks for the heads-up on the clutch-line wear thru. I'll check it closely tonight. I had a 2002 Forester with a dual-mass flywheel. The whole flywheel/ clutch assembly was replaced twice under warranty, the second time back to a solid flywheel as per the factory update, with a softer clutch. Seems they were having similar issues, started with a "squeeak" with clutch release when taking off, assumed it was just a dodgy thrust bearing at first but was apparently wear and friction between the flywheel parts.
There's a decent tech explanation here:

and an animation here:

Is there an easy way to check clutch wear? I have been a bit worried about this for a while now.
The other day I thought maybe my clutch was slipping a bit on a hill. But it was wet so it was probably (hopefully) more likely to be a bit of wheelspin.
