Default What GPS to buy?

I am in the market for a GPS and am leaning toward the Magellan series. However I find that I can buy the Magellan Platinum/Gold series units for about half price on EBay.
Any suggestions on this purchase? If I can buy through EBay, are the unit any good? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

OzJeeper,

I have had various brands over the years. I noticed a huge improvement when I moved from 8 to 12 satellite units. I presently have a Garmin Streetpilot III in the workshop vehicle and a Garmin GPS IV in the buggy. Both are very easy to use and I have found them excellent.

I guess it comes down to what features you are after. I think the Magellan is a very good quality brand though.

If you want to interface a notebook and mapping software, both Garmin models I have do this really well. The software I have is from Garmin also but is AU specific.

WOLFOZJEEPER,
I bought the MAGELLAN PLATINUM just before easter and it cost me $999 @ HARVY NORMAN. At the time they where selling on consignment for MAGELLAN in Osbourne Park WA.
After having it for a few months I look back and think Maybe I should have bought a COMPAQ with a GPS adapter. The benefit of this is better screen visability, color screen and other things like touch screen menus built in memory ETC.

The downside is they arn't water proof or shock proof (meaning the COPAQ or palm type units)
By the time you buy the SD card, external power cable, swivle dash mount, data cable and the MAPSEND software your paying around the $1400 mark.
But the MEGELLAN unit is a great unit even works indoors and through thick tree top canopies.
Just my 2c worth!
