I was reading the section on changing wheels and tyres, and to me, I read it as saying you can't change the overall diameter of your wheel/tyre combination by more than 25mm.
If someone is to change their stock 28" tyre to a 32" tyre, is does this then mean that it's not legal? Or am I reading this wrong?
That's right it isn't legal. This is one area that I've never been picked up on with any modified vehicle. My old Kombi ran a 4.4lt V8. It was engineered for this but also ran 235/75/15's which were much bigger than the standard 185/78/14's and looked it especially since it was lifted. Every year at rego time I'd get hassle from the checking place over the engine (engineered etc) but never over the wheels (not engineered). I'd always get through when I produced the engineers certificate for the engine though and never had issues with the tyres. I even claimed on insurance after an accident with no problems.
I'm not saying that noone cares about this law but I doubt I'll get any hassles running illegal 30's on my XJ instead of the 28's... I think if the jeep looks legal you'd be fine... 32's may be pushing it though.
Has anybody had any real hassles with this tyre law???
I beleive what they mean is you cant change the rim diameter more than the specified amount.
The profile of the tyre is not a concern as long as they dont foul the gaurds etc.
Actually it says the diameter cannot be greater than 15mm over or under the standard total diameter otherwise it needs to be engineered!!! See the Minor Changes section.
