Default ZJ 4.0 loses power after 2500 rpm when low fuel?

My 4.0 seems to be a great engine but when it is down to it's last 20 litres of fuel if coughs and powere comes on and off just after 2500 rpm, If I fill it up again no probs, I am thinking either there is some crap/water in the tank or more likely that the fuel pump has a problem where it can not get enough fuel into it for dome reason, doe the 87L tank have baffles or a surge tabk or some other system?

If it only EVER happens when you're running low on fuel then i would say that there is a problem with the fuel pump getting fuel. Does it sound like it's running out of fuel? Is it under warranty? How long after the 'E' comes on do you drive? (just had to say it)

Call DC Australia. Many ZJ's were subject to a factory recall to replace the fule pump/filter in the fuel tank. As you purchased yours second hand, this warrantly replacement may not have been performed.

The symptoms you describe are consistent with a blocked fuel filter and/or a defective fuel pump. The latter is a non replaceable component within the factory fuel pump.

Resolution: Contact DCA and try to effect the warranty replacement. If this cannot be done, replace the fuel pump filter and fit an in-line filter. There are many after market filters, too many to mention here. I have had good results with K&N billet alley, rebuildable filters.

HOWEVER: if after replacing the pump/filter the problem remains, there are other steps to be taken which we can address after you have contacted DCA.

Ok, thanks for that, I will look into it, I just refilled it this morning and the prob has gone away. I persisted woth the prob until I could get around to a petrol station and fill it, when I did fill it tis morning it took 81 Litres so I guess there was just 6 litres left in the tank. At the time the prob occurred I would have had ab out 15-20 litres left in the the tank.

I was at a jeep dealer yesterday and they idd a "VIP Check: to see if all recalls had been effected on this car, they apparently have although I didn't look at the list, might give them a call now.

PC,
I have a similar problem on my 99 XJ...below a 1/4 tank fuel starves when I go around a street corner. It's OK in a straight line, just starves momentarily as I accelerate after turning.

I presume there is a problem with the fuel pick-up but haven't done anything about it yet. I just keep the tank topped up!

I'd be interested to hear the results of your investigations.

I had the same thing with the TJ for a while, took it back to the dealer a told him it wasn't good enough and they replaced the fuel sender and pick up and havn't had a problem since.
