Default Question about rims

Hi,

I am currently on AT tires 315/75 on 16/8" rims with 4.5" backspace, 0 offset and 5/5 (5/127) bolt pattern on my WJ.
I have a set of MT tires which I want to put on some steel rims for offroading. Makes it easier for me to simply switch between the tires, depending on what I want to do.

Unfortunately the rims itself have a very particular measure which is not so easy to get (in OZ and US). I most likely would end up buying the same rims again in US if I want to have same measure.

However I found some rims with 16/7' and 4" backspace and consider them to buy instead. Since the width is just 7 and the backspace if .5" less it should give me exact same position of the wheel with my above spec. And they are local which would mitigate my investment quite a bit.

The only concern I have is if the width of the rim will cause any issue, esp. since I want to use it for offroad. Could it be that the tire is loosing stability or even slip off the rim in certain cases? I mean its only an inch but it could cause some issues I suppose.

Does anyone have any input here?

Thanks
Joerg

make sure the tires you want will fit a narrower rim, when going wider tires they can require a minimum 8" wide rim for stability.
Also going a narrower rim will reduce the stability of the tire on road but reduce rolling beads offroad.
Maybe try procomp rims, they have heaps of rims options that are not listed, so they might make the ones you are after.

Thanks Straubz.

I actually checked the spec of the tires and it is recommended to run them on 8" rims at minimum.

To my surprise I found some steel rims on Ebay from a local vendor with the exact spec I need. And they cost even less then the 7" I found on a dealer website. I am planning to get those just to make sure that I am not running into the issues you described above.

Thanks
Joerg
