Default Help me understand when to NOT USE 4WD LOW

Hi all,

Pretty self explanatory really. I know you shouldn't use 4wd Low on the tarmac, but what type of other surfaces are a no no? Should you use it on a dirt road, on gravel, on the beach etc. Or is it only for mud and rock crawling?

Is there an upper speed limit when using it?

BTW I searched "4WD Low" in the KK forum and got no matches. That's weird for sure.

Thanks,

Mark

I don't think the topic has ever come up in the KK section.

Not claiming to be an expert by any stretch, just owned a few brands of 4wd. My observations for speed limit is that I quickly get tired of the high engine revs when the track conditions begin to allow for reasonable speed, so just stop and go to high. Really can't see any damage occurring to the transfer case or gearbox due to high speed.

I use low range whenever needed on any surface other than a paved one. It's fair to assume that a moderately loose dirt road will offer enough slip to release any pressure on the drivetrain, it's not like it has lockers on it.

No broken drive components so far but I'm still willing to be educated otherwise.

40kph is the recommended maximum for 4wd Low, according to the manual.

I use Low the same as KKnut... Should be fine on anything other than paved/sealed surfaces. Can't really see a reason that going over a certain speed would cause any damage - just listen to the engine - when revs start to get a bit high and the track is smooth enough for consistent speed, I'd be going for high range.

If you need to ask, you probably should not be using it.
Its for very steep & rough conditions when high first high is struggling. Good for pulling others out of a bog.

People please ask away as no one has all the answers, for crying out loud the dealers are clueless to start with so we only have each other.

Obviously it's correct that you generally only use Low for the stickier and steeper delicate situations not just on any graded fire trail.
