Default 2000 XJ TD slow return to idle issue

Hi all,

Thank you guys for sharing the knowledge on this great forum. I have this issue with my 2000 XJ TD where my revs hang at around 1000rpm before slowly returning to idle when I release the throttle.

Here's a video of it: https://youtu.be/TV4719jowBc

Also the idle stays at 1000rpm if I am coasting in neutral with no throttle and only settles when I come to a complete stop.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

George

High idle when coasting I think is normal, mine does it. Mine used to have the other idle problem as well, I dropped the idle by moving the top of the IP just a tiny bit. Still does it a bit sometimes. Probably an electronic thing with the computer just catching up. Also it will be high when the aircon is on.
I wouldnt get too concerned with it.

You might have a problem with you Throttle position sensor on you accelerator pedal. Tap it when it is playing up & see.

As you coast in neutral it should idle a little high & then drop to normal when you come to a stop.

Thank you all for your replies!

TPS sensor reads 0% to 100% with a cheap obd scanner and torque app. I might measure it with a multimeter as well to be sure. My idle reads 850rpm (torque app again) as opposed to 750rpm in the manual.

The issue is more pronounced when the engine is at normal operating temp an barely noticeable when cold. This has to do with something I would guess.

Layback40, how exactly did you perform the IP top drop? Something I could safely do? No aircon on my xj.

Start with the easy one : accelerator pedal free movement .
I pour 200ml of 2 stroke oil in the tank at every full fill up (it keeps the injection pump happy ) .
Rpm's should drop to around 800 once stopped .
