Don't knock it til you've tried it. I got a can of carbon cleaner put through my 2012 wk2 which restored the performance and lowered the fuel economy back to what it was. Best 'Snake Oil' I've used.

I think if you install a catch can the issues with the EGR caking are less of a problem as the carbon combines with oil vapour from crankcase to make the sludge that blocks everything up. So remove the vapour and carbon won't sludge as quick. In saying that I still believe the EGR block is a good thing also as a catch can can't filter 100%.

Liqui Moly make a great intake cleaner I have used several times on mates cars. Liqui Moly Diesel Engine Intake Decarb

Use the whole can in one go and it cleans pretty well.

It's also a pretty easy job to clean the intercooler. Front bumper takes about 5 mins to remove, you can then just unclip the tranny cooler, undo the intercooler pipes and then the intercooler just unclips. Block one end (a rubber glove and one of the hose clamps is a cheap way) and fill with degreaser. Let is soak for a while and give it a good shake around. Drain it and flush well with a hose (keep the glove on hear but cut a hole in it, that way there is enough back pressure for the water to actually fill the intercooler to make sure it flushes properly. I then leave it out in the sun to dry, then finally blow out with compressed air. You could also do a final flush with petrol and leave in the sun to evaporate.

Pipe you can soak in degreaser. I but a cheap bottle brush and give them a good clean. Just a tie a bit of wire to the handle and pull brush through with the draw wire on the long hoses.

If you have never fitted a catch can and have done more than 60k km, I would definitely be looking at doing this clean.

Yea, I looked at using that stuff though had all sorts of problems getting the damn clamp off the hose that sits on the body of the intake. Any tricks in removing this thing?

Haha I did too when replacing factory pipes with the cb engineering ones. Just get creative with 2 screwdrivers. You need to gently pry from the top aswell as at the bottom where the 2 locking tabs are. Try prying gently at around 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock and they may just pop out enough to then pry at the top in the tab.
