Default Insurance for a 22 yo car....

As most of you know, my Jeep is a one owner car.... and 22 years later, the insured value of the car is almost nil. Many of its key components are either still in excellent working order, or are new ... except the paint job [because that already looks new .. as the red clay becomes unstuck over a number of years].

What happens if you have spent your hard earned money, lifting the car [which is another story in itself], installing air lockers, racks, bars, winches, lights etc, but your insured value is near rock bottom and the slightest prang would make your insurer offer a token wad of cash to wipe their hands clean with the matter? Is there an insurer who would cover these extras? Is it worth covering the extras?

The question is would you insure these extras or not tell the insurer about it, and your plan is to rip these extras off the car in the event of the unthinkable....

My point of view is you only need to insure anything you cannot afford to replace. We all need third party property insurance. Some of those policies will cover you to a small degree if your car is deemed a write off and you are not at fault. In that scenario, you can usually keep your car as the parts are worth than the car. An upside to this is in the event of a crash, you are not obliged to have your vehicle towed so an insurance assessor can inspect it. Of course your car was legal in all modifications.

QBE and Club 4x4 offer good agreed value policies. I changed from QBE to Club this year and they seem a lot better to deal with (no international call centres so far) and also cheaper for the same value cover. Club 4x4 let yo list the total value of mods and this is added to the vehicle value for a total insured value. If it's a lot they may ask you to list mods and price them individually.

* do you retain rights to wreck

* will the vehicle be a STAT WRITE-OFF in the event of damage that requires insurance intervention of say $2500+

important to know

my white one has fruit, and when some dickhead smashed it from behind, it was parked unreg, but his insurance company gave me an agreed (between them & me) value, NO stat write-off, + keep vehicle
i found Shannons are good to deal with
