Default Noises

Hi all

I’ve just purchased a 2017 wk and although it’s a lovely car to drive, there are a few nuances that are doing my head in. First one is a whistle from the aircon fan. I could liken the noise to the fan bearings needing lubrication but I’m not entirely sure if this is the problem. I’ve pulled the cabin filter out and spun the fan and it won’t make the sound. I’ve run the fan with the filter out with my head stuck in the glove box space, no noise. But when I put it all back together and go for a drive, sound comes back. Not straight away, but after several minutes it’s back. But only if the fan is on. If I turn it off, it goes away. Wracking my brain.

Second noise is from the boot. Only happens on sharp jarring bumps. Upon first thoughts it was the jack assembly that sits in the spare tyre. I’ve removed it and it still does it. I’ve wrapped a towel around it and suppressed it with linen and it still does it. I’ve pulled the trim out from all around the spare, can’t find anything loose. Second to putting my son in the boot(which I won’t do) and going for a drive, I’m stumped. The boot lid itself seems firm but can’t quite tell. I’ve crawled around underneath and nothing seems loose…

Heeeelllllllllllpppppp. The radio stations here are crap so I can’t turn the radio up.

Re whistling ,could be the hvac motor ,been happening frm 2011 on dealers well aware of this problem.,also check filter has been inserted correctly or put a new one in as you say noise goes when filter removed.
Re knocking,Is it a knocking noise.?The top rear shock mounts are well known area for this noise. Mine would only knock over certain bumps.Replaced them a couple of
months ago ,noise gone.Easy job to do .half hour each side .Plenty of youtube info Got new mounts from RockAuto in the US.
Acouple of tips if removing shocks. Only remove rear plastic plugs on the plastic inner guard ,it can be bent to reach two top mount bolts. You will need a cheap spark plug tube spanner to remove top shock nut which is inside the top mount

Fan could be it just needs a new filter ................ or it could be the windscreen trim is loose and causing it, the trim is a known problem on some...............

Boot as BJM said upper rear shock mounts or tow bar hitch if you have one, the rear door will clunk of slightly loose but often the dash light will come on.....of course check wheel nuts are done up....an often overlooked check.

Hmmm really good points. Thank you. I’m going to check out all those items today. Is there any way I can tell that the shock mounts need replacing simply from inspecting throughout the guard trim. Before I order a set?

I think the cabin filter is fairly new as it’s quite clean but yes it may not be seated correctly so I’ll attempt to secure it better and see if that helps.

Moneys on top shock rubbers for the rear noise....very common...did all the things you did...checked all the things you did....jumped on here and the source is very common....Im putting up with the noise until a Lift Kit goes in...no point doing something twice...its 'annoying' at times as we tend to focus on a 'noise' once we've identified it.
A/C 'whine' has been in mine for near a year....I did have an issue with Pine Needles entering the blower motor.....but......you say the noise stops when the filter is removed....a loooooong look at the filter and its fitting in the housing will sort that I'd say.
First Ive heard of the hvac issue, but thats why Im on here...to learn.
Good luck.

ps: the noise in the a/c area wont be the loose trim vibrating against the windscreen....this only occurs at speeds above 95kph, and is an easy fix with a line/bead of Loctite 401 in the area that has come away from the windscreen

The rubbers flog out...just replace them...its a very common ongoing thing and is gonna have to happen at sometime...may as well have a baseline from new purchase (be it a new 2nd hand car a baseline is always good)
BJM.....have you tried Nurothane 'rubbers' in that location ???....just thinking of going that way when I fit the Lift Kit....had them on a a few of my Rangies (more rubbers than a Chemist I tell ya) and although they did 'stiffen' the ride a little....they werent terribly uncomfortable and I never replaced one after fitting them....and....they were fitted correctly so the whinge and moan about them being noisey stems purely from incorrect fitting...nothing else.....any input from yourself or other forum members welcome.
Cheers.
