TJ Flares on a XJ
Hmmmm interesting. As Jimmy knows I've been tossing around some ideas on this. I was going to cut my fenders and fit those bushranger type flexy flares. It would have been a days job but it wasn't going to look factory. But these seem a far better option. Still a bit of cutting but the end result is far nicer looking. In that article the dude said he separated the rear fender from the body 'cause he cut so high, I'd wouldn't try that 'cause you can buckle the fender too easily and lengthy panel beating follows. Just too risky. Remember that those two panels are held in a jig before welding and when they're separated they'll go wherever they want!
You can get heaps of clearance by cutting at the join of the two welds, it just depends if the replacment fender is going to run along the line you cut, or reduce the opening like the original. If you could extend the opening of the fender along the line of bolts that holds the original flare on, and the tj rear flare doesn't reduce the new opening, I reckon ( with a 4" lift) you could easily get 32's and possibly squeeze 33's, as these were the sizes I was aiming for with my flexy flare mod.
So, we'll have to look into this a bit further then....
