Help! Front driveshaft going bad
Hi all,
I noticed my front driveshaft boot (on the rzeppa joint) was slightly torn and slinging grease. It sometimes makes a noise in 4wd and I am worried it is going to fail.
Problem is, I'm on holiday around gold coast for a few days, then I need to drive back to Melbourne... I am not sure what to do as all the Jeep specialists I know of around are closed until early January, and I am not sure what I can do without a new driveshaft or a replacement rzeppa joint. I don't have sufficient tools to take the driveshaft out on the side of the road.
Any suggestion for a jeep specialist open, or do your reckon I could drive all the way to Melbourne?
Thanks!

Wouldn't worry about it till its always making noise, some owners drive for months with drive shaft noise. Just avoid sand/dirt/water while the boot is damaged

Thanks! It's a tad too late for sand and water as I'm coming back from Fraser Island and realised there that I had this clunking noise, and the had a look at the shaft...
By the way it is the boot on the transfer case side, not the one in the middle (this one is not critical).
It's only making noise under heavy load (4H under strong acceleration or 4L tuning on sand), and have avoided 4wd since, but it must have had a fair bit of sand and salt water
...
I'll try to take it easy and get a new teeaflex rzeppa in Melbourne

When you take it off check out the U-Joint
Mine went bad and eventually seized one way but had worn the front pinion bearing over time.
Might be worth replacing whilst you've got it removed if its done a lot of miles including water crossings.
Its tack welded in, so you would need to take it to a drive shaft specialist to get it replaced and shaft re balanced.

Only 40,000km...
If that's the case I'll buy a new driveshaft, I can get a Tattons landed here for 600 bucks...

Mine had done 140,000 km so yours should be OK at that low mileage, but worth keeping an eye on
Cost for replacement U-Joint inc balancing here in England was equivalent to $200 AU so quite a saving as against cost of a new Mopar shaft
