Those last digits of the PCM part number differentiate which model/engine/transmission and emissions package the PCM is set up for. The last letters indicate revision which could change due to various reasons.

I can't find any PCM ending in 252 in the parts lists, so don't know if that's aussie specific or not.

The 99 XJ parts list shows 494(AC) indicates a 4.0L Auto with Euro emmissions.

If similar to TJs up to 97 don't have a vacuum leak detector pump, which was fitted from 98 on. 97 TJs also didn't have cruise as an option. Pin outs are I think the same otherwise. Later PCMs changed plugs/pinouts so aren't swappable in TJs.

Similarly, XJs 96-99 might be swappable as long as engine and transmission match. Leak detection faults might be generated though on early models if using a newer PCM. I'd have to look at the XJ PCMs to check connectors/pin outs and determine what other PCMs might be swapped.

well both my April '96 have a 252, and my Oct 96 has a 293 ( I think).. not shown in oifficial 94-96 Parts Manual, but advertised on Ebay for repair/exchanhe from USA

Anything after 96 has an immobilisr too, so that would be an issue

I would try the guy who wrecks them in Bowral or Mittagong via Gumtree, he seems to know his electrical stuff well, very reas9onable prices

a spare 252 is a good thing to have, even netter if it solves yr problem

"If you need a replacement PCM for a 1996 XJ, the part number must match exactly, number for number. 1996 was a transition year from OBD-I to OBD-II and there are no other model year PCM that are known to interchange."...... so a guy over on jeepforums says...... I know Dual Post but relevant to both threads

think I have some evidence for you.

in my opinion, a pre '96 will not work, as they are OBD1

a '98 or later will not work, due to different trans communication and immobiliser issues

that leaves 96-97.

I suspect any vehicle with an immobiliser will not work on a '96

however, from these 2 ads, and fact, these 2 computers should work for your 96..a 252 and a 293

https://www.automodulesource.com/150...6-gas-ecm.html

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Cherok...d=113659502410

In one of the ads, it cross references the other parts as compatible

neither are listed in the 94-96 Parts Manual, which is pretty mystifying

a 99 Sport likes a 494 AE...I will check the build date
