Default Moving from Atlanta, Georgia to Sydney.

Hey everyone. My name is Brandon. Found out I'm moving. I'm a network engineer that's going to take a new position in Sydney effective in about a year! It's a long process! Got a chance to visit a few weeks before giving the final decision earlier this year and we can't be more excited!

With that, I have to decide what stays, and what goes, and what I need to pickup before I leave when it comes to my whole life that includes my Jeeps and my parts.

I'm married with 3 kids and 5 vehicles. Yes I said 5.... I have a 2001 XJ Cherokee Limited and a 99 XJ Cherokee Sport which together is my current project. I have a 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x which is what they call a Navara here but they still sell the D40 here. The new third generation D23 is not sold in North America yet. My truck is my daily driver. We own a 2013 Volkswagen Routan SE. It's a North American specific vehicle and is essentially a rebadged Dodge Caravan\Chrysler Town and Country. It's our whole family goes somewhere people mover. And last but not least my wife's 2015 Nissan Leaf used as her commuter.

I've been a Jeep owner of some sort my entire life. My wife and I have owned mostly Jeeps, Volkswagens, and Nissans. I've had 2 96 XJ Cherokees, a 02 KJ Liberty, a 98 TJ Wrangler, 2000 VW Beetle, 04 VW Jetta GLS, 05 Jetta GLI, 2012 Jetta TDI, 14 Jetta SE, 16 Jetta GLI, 2000 Nissan Frontier. Before I became a network engineer I used to be an automotive technician at Nissan, Ford, and Subaru dealerships. What can I say, I like cars!

Figure I can use this site to get local info. I'm clueless as to what is street legal and what isn't there. I have found out that shipping my vehicles most likely will not happen because of the ADR rule on Right hand Drive. I have considered modifying my XJ project and finding a new base XJ from a Postal Jeep in Right Hand Drive configuration but I have not made a final decision. I've also considered doing a 88 to 89 MJ Comanche since they weren't sold there and shipping it since anything over 30 years can be left in Left Hand Drive. There could be lots of other rules I'm not tracking.

Looking forward to the move and being in the Jeeping community in Aus!

It's going to be very disappointing for you when you realise what is legal and what is not. Most people that do wheel hard will build slightly outside the legal standpoint and hope to not be caught, past that, depending, an XJ trail only rig could be an option also.

Throw up some pics of what you have now.

Syd is an expensive place to live I hope they are compensating you enough for the high accommodation costs, better yet get your employer to pick up that tab.

Congrats for you and your family,

I made the move from Northern Canada to Sydney three years ago this week and i'm sure once your family settles in you will love it.

As far as the legal mods to lift and tires I would describe it as "not much"

If you are serious about your modifications I would research vehicles that have been engineered (certified legal) in NSW

You can do a lot provided you get it engineered, there are examples of fully legal cars running 35s and 4" lifts. If you self-certify mods, it's very limited.

Good but expensive I'd reckon Toyota build:

without consulting an "ENGINEER" and working on building a rig that way u'll be limited to suspension 2" higher than standard and 2" larger tyres. bullbars must be ADR compliant etc...

many run slightly larger tyres and left (3.5" lift and 4" larger tyres on my tj) and haven't had any issue with police or transport however this raises another issue, if you are involved in an accident your insurance may be void and ull be responsible for the cost of repair to both vehicles.
